Babies’ Cries May Foretell Their Adult Voices

A recent study indicated that the pitch of a boy’s voice at age seven will principally predict what he can sound like as an adult. Next time when you hear a baby cry, take a good listen. It might tell how its voice later as an adult. Pitch of babies’ cries at 4 months old may predict the pitch of their speech at age 5.

“In utero, you have a lot of different things that can alter and impact your life not only as a baby but also at an adult stage,” said Nicolas Mathevon, a professor

There aren’t many studies that address these questions, so that makes this research especially intriguing. Previous research has shown that although adult voices range significantly based on sex, there are no sex differences in the pitch of babies’ cries before puberty.
The new study reinforced those findings a significant and substantial predictor of the pitch of their speech. Babies cry to call attention to their immediate needs: food, or rest, or a diaper change or cuddles.

These findings suggest that a substantial proportion of between-individual differences in voice pitch, which convey important biosocial information, may partly originate in utero and present soon after birth.
This isn't the first time; the researchers have looked into what determines how a person will sound when they're older.
