Have you heard the news? World Microbiome Day is launching on the 27th June!

What is World Microbiome Day?

World Microbiome Day aims to showcase the diverse worlds of microbiomes, and to encourage public on their critical importance. World Microbiome Day has been developed by APC Microbiome Ireland. The theme is “Mind our Microbes”. To encourage microbiome researchers from around the world, working on different microbial worlds. Events to celebrate microbes are being planned right around the world including in Ireland, Poland, Spain, UK, USA, Dubai, Indonesia and Paraguay.

 Microbes have a bad reputation for causing disease. But, in actual fact, the vast majority of microbes do not cause any harm, and many are essential for plant, animal and human life.

Here are list of some human microbes benefits:

Helping digestion through breaking down foods
Immune system development;
Preventing infections by competing with pathogens
The synthesis of essential nutrients such as Vitamin K and B12 as well as short chain fatty acids.
Scientists have also found that gut microbiomes are able to influence brain function and behaviour.

Taking care of “good” microbes may be more important than destroying “bad” microbes.
So it is imperative that we protect our microbes, particularly the microbes in us and those in the environment that contribute to the health of our planet

So who's excited about World Microbiome Day? Get in touch and let us know your thoughts. For a full list of events and further information on microbiomes please see
