Beginning its life with an early ending
The adult human body is home to trillions of red blood cells these blood cells carry oxygen, iron, and many other nutrients. When a woman is pregnant, it’s possible that her baby’s blood type will be incompatible with her own. This can cause a condition known as Erythroblastosis fetalis, where the mother’s WBC attack the baby’s red blood cells, this condition is highly preventable. The immune system reacts by making antibodies against it.If left untreated, this condition can be life-threatening too.
There are two main causes of erythroblastosis fetalis: Rh incompatibility and ABO incompatibility. It’s difficult to test a fetus’s blood. The first pregnancy is usually not affected, but future pregnancies will be complicated. The placenta becomes detached from the uterus wall during delivery.
Red blood cells carry several types of proteins, called antigens, on their surfaces. Each parent passes one A, B, or O antigen gene to their child.

The clinical features of erythroblastosis fetalis result from destruction of fetal RBCs by maternal antibodies against them. The major symptoms of erythroblastosis fetalis are: Jaundice, Hemolytic Anaemia, Kernicterus, and Hydrops Fetalis
Fluid accumulation in the lungs prevents normal breathing because the lungs cannot expand fully. Babies may develop this condition before they are born. This may cause severe anemia. Anemia makes it difficult for the RBCs in your baby's blood to carry enough oxygen to his body.
Every day we do get closer to a cure. Three out of four children who are diagnosed with Erythroblastosis fetalis will survive the disease, but that is not good enough. The loss of one child to this disease is too much.
