They live when you give - World Blood Donor Day

Theme: Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life

Every year on 14 June world celebrates Blood Donor Day. The global event will be held in Athens on 14 June 2018.

The event thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their serve in life-saving gifts. It helps patients suffering from life-threatening conditions to live quality of life and to support complex medical procedures. It also has a life-saving role in maternal and child care and during the emergency response.
India is one of the many countries suffering from severe blood shortage. People around the world of all ages need the blood transfusion to survive. Blood donation does not cost money and requires little time. But donors are either not available or the available blood is not safe.

But why does that happen?

The probable reason could be that people do not have a clear idea about donating blood.T his day also strongly encourages more people, who might be somewhat hesitant about giving blood, to sign up and start donating. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), blood transfusion saves lives, but many patients needing transfusion do not have timely access to safe blood. Donated blood is tested for viruses, including HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, and West Nile virus.
Donating blood helps prevent or reduce your risk of developing hemochromatosis. Reduces heart disease risk. Regular blood donation helps to keep iron levels in check, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

People who donate blood notice a few minor side effects like nausea, lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting, but these symptoms usually go away quickly.
Is a parent’s blood safer for their children?Blood collected from them undergoes the same testing as altruistic donations.
